Brainhill MD touts STEM education, women empowerment and youth entrepreneurship drive

Managing Director of Brainhill International School, Mary Anane Awuku, says innovation, flexible schooling and heavy investment in teachers have driven the rapid growth of the Accra-based institution, as she expands her footprint across education, facility management and entrepreneurship development.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Awuku said Brainhill, founded eight years ago at East Legon, has twice been recognised as the best international school in Ghana and is preparing to open a fourth campus.

The school offers a Cambridge-accredited curriculum and operates extended hours to support working parents, receiving pupils as early as 6 a.m. and closing as late as 8 p.m.

“We focus heavily on STEM and problem-solving. We don’t just want children to memorise; we want them to create solutions,” she said.

She attributed the school’s growth largely to word-of-mouth referrals from parents and strong investment in teachers.

“They are the business. They carry the brand. If you don’t invest in your staff, you can’t get results,” she noted.

Beyond education, Awuku also leads FacilityPro Management Services, a facility management company employing over 700 workers nationwide and providing cleaning, fumigation, landscaping and CCTV installation services. The company has recently expanded into producing its own cleaning detergents.

Her latest initiative is an Entrepreneurial Psychology Masterclass scheduled for March 28, aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs with practical and research-based insights into business strategy, finance and people management.

“Business is a science,” she explained. “You must understand the psychology of customers, employees and stakeholders to succeed.”

Awuku said many young entrepreneurs delay starting because they wait for large capital injections, advising instead that they begin small and grow organically.

“Start small and grow. When huge capital comes too early, many lose it,” she cautioned.

Through her Yes She Can Foundation, she also continues to mentor women and girls, helping them overcome financial and mentorship barriers that often limit female participation in leadership and entrepreneurship.

For Awuku, education remains the foundation.

“Continuous learning opens doors. The more you know, the more you can give,” she said.
