Lead Content Creator at Oneplay Africa and Ottobi Entertainment, Ok Joseph, has expressed concern over the possible shutdown of Boomplay’s Ghana office, saying it could cripple the local music industry.
In an interview with Obomengniibaa Nana Akua on Saturday (24 May) on AsaasePa 107.3, he warned that Ghanaian artistes may be left stranded if the streaming platform pulls out.
“If Boomplay pulls out, we will suffer, because they are the only streaming platform with an office in Ghana,” he said, adding that artistes who face challenges on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Audiomack often struggle to access support since those services have no physical presence in the country.
Ok Joseph also mentioned that GMX, a Ghanaian-owned streaming platform launched to support local music, failed to gain traction due to lack of investment and continuity. “GMX came with promise, but it was not sustained. That is why Boomplay’s presence became even more essential.”
He explained that Boomplay goes beyond streaming by curating playlists, supporting emerging talent, and offering editorial exposure for Ghanaian artistes. Its rumoured closure, linked to unpaid royalties and financial challenges, has sparked fear in the music community.
“This is more than just a streaming service. It is a creative partner. If we lose Boomplay, the effect on Ghanaian artistes will be serious,” he added.
With Boomplay reportedly struggling with internal financial issues, industry players are calling for urgent steps to protect platforms that support Ghanaian music and keep the industry thriving.
