The Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has called on Muslims in the region to actively support efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to pose a serious threat to the environment and water security.
Addressing a large gathering at the Sunyani Jubilee Park during the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations, Akwaboa emphasised the crucial role the Muslim community can play in tackling this menace.
He warned that illegal mining endangers food production and contaminates water sources, urging those involved to desist before facing legal consequences.
“We have implemented stringent measures to curb galamsey in the Bono Region, and we will not tolerate any interference in the enforcement of the law.
“Even if the Sunyani East Member of Parliament, Seid Mubarak, intervenes on behalf of an arrested individual, it will not change anything. No one will be spared from prosecution,” Akwaboa stated.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, highlighting the reduction in Hajj fares and the introduction of two public holidays for Eid celebrations as key achievements.
He urged the Muslim community to continue fostering peace and unity in the Bono Region, stressing that harmony is essential for regional development.
During the event, the Bono Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Imam Baba Seidu, led prayers and encouraged Muslims to support the less privileged, reinforcing the core Islamic values of compassion and generosity.
Muslims worldwide marked Eid ul-Fitr, celebrating the end of Ramadan. In Sunyani, hundreds gathered at the Jubilee Park to observe prayers and express gratitude to Allah. The ceremony was attended by political figures and community leaders.
In Goaso, the Ahafo Regional capital, Muslims congregated at the Roman School Park for prayers and thanksgiving.
The Ahafo Regional Deputy Chief Imam, Imam Hamed Muhammad Unus, who led the prayers, urged political leaders to uphold transparency, honesty, and integrity while prioritising the concerns of Ghanaians to drive national progress.
In an interview with Asaase News, he emphasised that successive governments have often failed to demonstrate transparency and trustworthiness.
He, therefore, called on political leaders to be forthright and accountable to ensure a better quality of life for citizens.
Imam Hamed Muhammad Unus encouraged Muslims to maintain discipline beyond Ramadan, remain committed to the five daily prayers, and foster unity and love among one another.
