Bono Region: Residents demonstrate over deplorable roads

A part of the Kuotokrom-Yawhima route was blocked by drivers and residents dressed in red and black, forcing some commercial vehicles to drop their passengers

Some residents in Sunyani in the Bono Region on Monday (13 June) hit the street to protest against bad road network in the municipality.

The residents of New Dormaa, Kuotokrom, and Yawhima have served notice that they will continue protesting until the government fix the roads, which they claim is making life unpleasant for them.

A tipper truck driver, who is also the convenor of the demonstration, Isaac Kumi Boateng told Asaase News that the poor road network is negatively affecting their operations, which could collapse their business.

A part of the Kuotokrom-Yawhima route was blocked by drivers and residents dressed in red and black, forcing some commercial vehicles to drop their passengers in the middle of their journey.

Some of the demonstrators carried placards reading, “We need tarred roads, not dust roads,” “Our roads are our fundamental necessities,” “Fix our road,” and “Yawhima-Kuotokrom deserves better.”

The protestors handed their petition to the regional minister Justina Owusu-Banahene after four hours of protesting from Yawhim to the Bono Regional RCC.

Owusu-Banahene praised the participants for a peaceful protest and promised to find answers to their problems.

President Akufo Addo during his visit to the Bono Region said the 17-kilometer Yawhim-Chiraa road contract had been re-awarded and it is expected to be completed by August 2020.

The road has seen no improvement because the contractor had left the site for months.
