A raging inferno has caused another disaster to traders at the Techiman central market in the Bono East region a month after similar calamity befell traders there.
The fire which erupted late on Sunday (9 February 2025) in the bustling Techiman market swept through the dried fishes’ section of the market destroying goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis, narrated the affected traders.
For Asanatu Sumaila, one of the traders whose wares were ravaged, she suspects a foul play in the recent intermittent fires that impede their businesses.
” I was called late in the evening when I was about to sleep. They told me, it was the maize section of the market, so I didn’t bother to come, only for me to find out this morning that, it was our warehouse “.
Asana also added, “We suspect some foul play the incident, five years ago, similar heart wreching incident happened to us, just last month, we heard about another incident just adjacent this section, today it has happened again. We plead that, whoever is involved should fear God and stop”.
Another trader, Amina Salia said, “I heard about the incident around 10:30 PM, I rushed here not considering what I was wearing. But thanks to the Ghana National Fire Service, they were able to douse the fire swiftly” we beg the government to try and find a lasting solution to this phenomenon”. She admonished.
The Techiman central market in the Bono East region is touted one of the busiest market centers in South of Ghana.
The has been the main trading point for most traders from Ghana and neighbouring countries such as Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast and Togo among others.
It is operating all week round with virtually every agricultural commodity sold there.
