Bonna to government: Disband operational wing of national security

The security analyst's call is coming on the back of recent invasion of Accra-based Citi FM by operatives of National Security

Story Highlights
  • "So for me, it’s a disgrace and for me if we don’t disband the operational wing of national security, Azugu and his people, if we don’t disband them, they are going to throw this country into chaos because they will go and do something that the state has not asked them to do.”

Adam Bonna, a security analyst wants the government to immediately disband the operational wing of the National Security.

His suggestion follows allegation of assault on a Citi FM/TV reporter, Caleb Kudah, by national security operatives and another attack on the Ashanti Regional Coordinator of National Security, DCOP Opare Addo.

Speaking to Asaase News, Bonna described the operations of the unit as shameful, adding their action is making the president unpopular.

“National security coordinator in a region will not just get up and be appointed. The president will have a hand in it, so to go there and cock a gun on him and handcuff him allegedly, and this is a deputy commissioner of police retired, you don’t just get up and get to that position before you retire,” he said.

Bonna added: “So for me, it’s a disgrace and for me if we don’t disband the operational wing of national security, Azugu and his people, if we don’t disband them, they are going to throw this country into chaos because they will go and do something that the state has not asked them to do.”

The security analyst said government must act swiftly to address the issue before it degenerates into a national crisis.

“It doesn’t matter if an individual is an NDC or NPP… once there is chaos there is chaos. So, we have got to tread cautiously and deal with them,” he said.

Bonna is therefore proposing for the recruitment of well-trained career intelligence officers whose alliance will be to the state and not political parties as is the current situation.
