Bonaa to police: Interdict officers over Nkoranza killing

Donkor was picked up at his mother’s residence at Kasadjan in the Nkoranza Municipality by the police on 25 April on suspicion of being involved in a robbery that had occurred on the Nkoranza-Kintampo road

A security analyst, Adam Bonaa, has called on the hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to interdict all officers linked to the alleged murder of Albert Donkor in Nkoranza in the Bono East Region.

Donkor was picked up at his mother’s residence at Kasadjan in the Nkoranza Municipality by the police on 25 April, on suspicion of being involved in a robbery that had occurred on the Nkoranza-Kintampo road.

Speaking to Asaase News, Bonaa supported calls for an independent body to investigate the case.

“Why did they not record him, giving out that confession on both on video and audio?” the security analyst asked.

“If they had done that, as this whole story broke, the first thing that they would have done would have been to probably share excerpts of this or tell us there is a video or audio recording of the deceased person confessing to this,” Bonaa said.

He added: “Even if they wouldn’t show it to us, some of us will have seen it because some of us work closely with them. But as we speak, they didn’t follow that protocol. So I will again go further to say the police should interdict the officers who were involved immediately while investigations are conducted.”

Independent probe

The family of Albert Donkor, the young man who was allegedly killed while in police custody, has also called for an independent probe into what it described as the “mysterious” incident.

The young man was reportedly taken into the bush and allegedly shot by police officers, after which his body was transferred to Accra.

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (16 May 2022), Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, the MP for Nkoranza, who is also an uncle of the dead man, alleged that his nephew was the victim of a targeted killing.

“Even the police for three weeks couldn’t tell us anything, nothing; until we went to the police intelligence unit and the lad told me they only keep dead bodies. Albert is no more and he is no more to defend himself. One of the policemen used to come to Albert’s house to eat.

“I think what needs to be done is that, there has to be an independent body to investigate and bring all these six or seven police men who shot him…”

“We need an independent body, we need the international organisation, we need Ghanaian authorities to give Albert the right and respectable justice.

“It is not fair, and this is not the first time, and everyone should be concerned. This is unprofessional, and it can happen to anybody in Ghana, including yourself,” he said.

Petition

The Nkoranza MP said the family had already petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, over the killing.

“The IGP himself called my dad [and] he called the mother as well to tell them what happened was not right and that they were going to investigate it,” Agyekum said.

Call for charges

Agyekum wants all the police officers allegedly involved in the killing to be interdicted immediately.

“My brother, if there is any good thing, the police people who shot the guy, the seven or eight police officers should have been interdicted by now. They should have been arrested by now.

“Those who came from Accra and had to even transport a body in a police car bucket to Accra, are you not hiding information? Because if you are transporting the body in a police car bucket to Accra, what were you doing to the body? Do you respect the family?” he asked.
