Bole goes a healthy green for Green Ghana Day

In the Savannah Region, the Bole District branch of the NHIS was one of the many state institutions nationwide which marked Green Ghana Day

The Bole District branch of the National Health Insurance Authority in the Savannah Region planted 60 trees on Friday 11 June as staff took part in Green Ghana Day, the nationwide tree planting exercise.

The Green Ghana Project, an initiative of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources @mlnr38, aimed to plant five million trees in a single day.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, represents Damongo, the regional capital, in Parliament.

The NHIS manager for Savannah, Mohammed Suraj-Deen, spoke to reporters after planting seedlings on the forecourt of the National Health Insurance Scheme office complex in Bole. He said that in line with President Akufo-Addo’s message urging state institutions and individuals to help, the NHIS had decided to implement its own version of Green Ghana Day in its own compound.

The NHIS began its afforestation project even before Green Ghana Day, Suraj-Deen said, so not only had the staff planted trees but they will also take good care of them.

Suraj-Deen, who led a team of NHIS staff in the planting, urged members of the public and state institutions to continue to support the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to improve Ghana’s forest cover.

The national exercise was a huge success. Schools, churches, community associations, environmental action groups, home gardeners and government institutions joined in a nationwide collaborative exercise to regreen Ghana. The demand for free seedlings exceeded all expectations.

A high-ranking official at the Forestry Commission, the main state agency responsible for executing Green Ghana Day, told Asaase News that the Commission had exceeded its target of five million trees.

It expects a final accounting will find that the FC distributed 6.5 million seedlings to make Green Ghana Day possible.
