Aya Institute calls for a more gender responsive and sensitive media landscape

The independent research and advocacy organisation commended Ghana's role as host and acknowledged the media's progress over the years

As Ghana prepares to host the 3rd African Media Convention from 15–17 May, the Aya Institute, a leading voice for gender equality, is urging the media landscape to embrace a more gender-responsive approach.

The independent research and advocacy organisation commended Ghana’s role as host and acknowledged the media’s progress over the years. However, they highlighted the critical need for increased gender representation and sensitivity.

“While appreciating the significant progress we have made over the years with the media, one critical area that is found wanting is intentionally working towards a gender-responsive and sensitive media landscape,” said the Aya Institute in a press statement.

Their statement echoes the findings of the Global Media Monitoring Project 2022, which revealed a stark underrepresentation of women in African media. The report found that only 25% of news sources and 24% of expert voices came from women across various platforms.

The Aya Institute further emphasised the importance of promoting women into leadership positions within media organisations. “We must commit to more appointments of women in leadership roles in news media organisations,” they said. “Which will go a long way to influence fairer and diverse editorial decisions on women and people of other social categories.”
