Black Starlets set sights on Benin after emphatic WAFU Zone B U-17 opener

The Black Starlets kicked off their 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Côte d'Ivoire

Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets, have turned their attention to their next opponent, Benin, following a dominant 5-1 victory against Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match of the 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations.

The emphatic win, secured on Wednesday (15 May), at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, puts the Starlets in a strong position to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—a tournament they haven’t reached since 2017.

Head coach Laryea Kingston, a former Ghana international winger, emphasised the team’s focus on winning every match. “We came into this tournament to make sure that we win all our games,” he said.

However, Kingston acknowledged the importance of adapting their approach to each opponent. “The good thing is Ivory Coast will play against Benin so it will help us to see how the Beninois team are playing,” he explained. “We managed to watch their last game before coming to this tournament; we have a little bit idea but we will see what happens against Benin.”

The WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations provides the Black Starlets with a crucial pathway to the U-17 AFCON. The top two teams from the tournament will qualify for the continental showpiece, offering Ghana a golden opportunity to end their seven-year absence.
