Black Starlets beat Côte d’Ivoire 5-1 in WAFU Zone B U-17 opener

Laryea Kingston's side has now set their sights on Benin, whom they face next Tuesday (21 May) at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets, kicked off their 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations campaign in emphatic fashion, demolishing Côte d’Ivoire 5-1 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Wednesday (15 May).

The Starlets, coached by former Black Stars winger, Laryea Kingston, are aiming to end their seven-year exile from the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by triumphing in the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, and they could not have wished for a more convincing start.

Kingston’s team took the lead in the 27th minute through Joseph Narbi, who doubled both his and Ghana’s advantage just before halftime with a powerful strike from outside the area.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Godfred Sarpong extending Ghana’s lead to three just three minutes after the restart. While a goal for Côte d’Ivoire in the 50th minute threatened a potential comeback, Harve Gbafa quickly restored Ghana’s three-goal cushion three minutes later.

Substitute Mark Kagawa Mensah then added a fifth goal in the 91st minute to seal a comprehensive victory and secure all three points for the Black Starlets.

Laryea Kingston’s side has now set their sights on Benin, whom they face next Tuesday (21 May) at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Victory in that match would guarantee their place in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations.
