Ghana’s 4x100m Relay teams miss gold at 13th African Games

The Nigerian quartet of Israel Sunday Okon, Ekanem Consider Emmanuel, Akintola Alaba Olukunle, and Itsekiri Usheoritse beat out Ghana by just 0.02 seconds

Ghana’s hopes for a repeat gold medal in the men’s 4x100m relay at the 13th African Games were dashed as they finished second to Nigeria in a nail-biting final held at the University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium on Wednesday (20 March).

The Ghanaian team, featuring a new-look line-up with Gadayi Edwin and Hammond Solomon replacing Sean Safo-Antwi and Martin Owusu-Antwi from the Rabat 2019 gold medal squad, qualified for the finals with a heat-winning time of 38.67 seconds.

However, in the finals, they were edged out by a determined Nigerian quartet (Israel Sunday Okon, Ekanem Consider Emmanuel, Akintola Alaba Olukunle, and Itsekiri Usheoritse), who clocked a time of 38.41 seconds, just 0.02 seconds ahead of Ghana’s 38.43 seconds. Liberia secured the bronze medal with a time of 38.73 seconds.

Despite Ghana’s failure to defend their gold medal in the Men’s event, the women’s 4x100m relay team found success, bringing home the bronze medal.

The team, featuring only one returning member (Hor Halutie) from the Rabat 2019 squad, finished third with a time of 44.21 seconds. This is a significant improvement from their 8th-place finish at the previous games.

Dominant performances from Nigeria (43.05 seconds) and Liberia (44.02 seconds) secured the top two spots in the women’s 4x100m relay.

With this result, Ghana remains in 6th place on the overall medal table with 49 medals (10 gold, 23 silver, and 16 bronze).
