Ghana’s Lipstick Band to perform at the Musiques Métisses Festival in France

The all-female band left Accra on 30 August to perform at the annual event, which celebrates and displays the diversity of cultures

Ghana’s all-female music group the Lipstick Band is set to perform at this year’s Musiques Métisses Festival in France.

Six musicians out of the eight-member group, including Sita Korley (keyboardist), left Accra on 30 August to represent the band at the festival.

The other band members on the trip abroad are Vida Ofoli (percussionist), Winifred Thompson (bassist), Abigail Aboagyewaa Aniapam (drummer), Abena Pomaa (guitarist) and Ruby Nunoo (lead vocalist).

The Musiques Métisses Festival, which is set to come off in Angouleme – a city located on a limestone plateau overlooking the Charente River – will also feature other bands from Ghana and Nigeria.

Speaking to Asaase News, Sita Korley said she believes that the organisers of the festival “are giving opportunities to new bands that have not gone international to perform, experience and be a part of the festival”.

“We’re mostly going to do our own songs, our own compositions which are not on the Ghanaian market yet. Maybe after we play our own songs, we will play the indigenous folk tunes like the ones the Wulomei play, which we call ‘Akolowa’ tunes,” said Korley, giving a preview of what the audience should expect of the band’s performance.

Lipstick Band

The Lipstick Band, formerly known as Les Femmes, was formed in 2014. The group won the Best Live Band of the Year at the Ghana Events Industry Awards in Accra last year.

The group has a broad repertoire covering a wide array of genres, including Afrobeat, highlife, jazz and reggae.

You can catch the bank most often at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill and the Gold Coast Restaurant and Bar, both in Accra.

About the Musiques Métisses Festival

The Musiques Métisses Festival is an annual event that started in 1976.

Formerly known as “Jazz en France”, it was originally dedicated to European music and jazz until the organisers opened up their boundaries and incorporated acts from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

The festival aims to celebrate and display the diversity of cultures while helping to build the careers of emerging and young talents.

The festival came to be known by its current name in 1985.

This 45th edition was scheduled to take place in the first weekend in June. It was postponed to the weekend of 10-12 September 2021, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The legendary Beninoise singer/songwriter Angélique Kidjo will be the main act for this year’s event.
