Bid for part of Nyinahin bauxite concession, Otumfuo tells Exton Cubic

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised the Exton Cubic Group to bid for a part of the Nyinahin bauxite concession

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised the Exton Cubic Group, owned by the Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama, to consider putting in a tender for a concession to mine bauxite at Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region.

He said given that the Exton Cubic Group had tried unsuccessfully in the past to mine bauxite in the Nyinahin area, the company should give it another try, now that the huge bauxite reserves have been divided into three concessions.

“Exton Cubic Group should tender for the remaining part of the vast bauxite concession at Nyinahin and if they are able to prove that they have the capacity to operate, then they should be given part of the concession to ensure peace,” he said.

Otumfuo also stressed the need for fairness to prevail in allocating concessions to companies to operate at Nyinahin, saying that any company which has the capacity to operate should not be discriminated against.

Rocksure International’s visit

The Asantehene was speaking as the management of Rocksure International paid a courtesy call on him at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The firm has been awarded a concession at Nyinahin to mine for bauxite.

Among other things, the historic visit was intended to give the Rocksure leadership an opportunity to inform Otumfuo and Asanteman officially of their readiness to mine bauxite at Nyinahin.

The Asantehene said Rocksure International was selected to mine bauxite locally after the company had gone through the laid-down procedures and beaten stiff competition from 38 other, equally competent companies.

“In all, 39 companies put in a tender for a concession to operate at Nyinahin and Rocksure International, which was one of the bidders, emerged tops,” he said, adding: “Exton Cubic did not put in a bid, and they should do so now.”

NDC threat

Yet while Otumfuo is pushing for officials to consider giving an allocation to the Exton Cubic Group to mine bauxite at Nyinahin, the Minority in Parliament seems to have a different agenda.

The Minority Leader, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, has made threats on Citi FM that he will lead the National Democratic Congress MPs to kick against the government’s allocation of a bauxite concession to Rocksure International, a Ghanaian-owned firm.
