The 9th Parliament of Ghana has officially elected Bernard Ahiafor, Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, as the 1st Deputy Speaker, and Andrew Amoako Asiamah, Member of Parliament for Fomena, as the 2nd Deputy Speaker.
Bernard Ahiafor, a practicing lawyer and seasoned legislator from the Volta Region, has represented Akatsi South since 2013.
Renowned for his expertise in legal and parliamentary procedures, Ahiafor has served on various committees, including the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committees.
His nomination by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader, highlighting his party’s confidence in his capabilities.
Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who has held the position of 2nd Deputy Speaker since 2021, was re-elected to continue in this capacity. Representing Fomena, Asiamah is recognized for his impartiality and commitment to parliamentary duties.
The elections were part of the official inauguration of the 9th Parliament on Tuesday (7 January), at Parliament House in Accra.
During the session, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo swore in Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament.
Bagbin, nominated by the NDC, had previously served as Speaker during the 8th Parliament and was re-elected with overwhelming support from Members of Parliament.
Following his swearing-in, Speaker Bagbin presided over the oath-taking ceremony for the 275 Members of Parliament-elect, marking the start of a new legislative term. Notably, the Ablekuma North constituency remains unrepresented due to an unresolved election matter.
With the NDC securing a majority of 183 seats in the 2024 elections, the party retained its leadership team for the new session, which includes:
Majority Leader: Cassiel Ato Forson (MP for Ajumako Enyan Essiam)
Deputy Majority Leader: Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP for Ellembelle)
Majority Chief Whip: Governs Kwame Agbodza (MP for Adaklu)
Deputy Majority Chief Whip: Ahmed Ibrahim (MP for Banda).
