School feeding caterers: We will cook after payment of arrears

The caterers have met with the managers of the programme and said they are expecting payments soon

Juliana Cudjoe, the president of the Greater Accra School Feeding Caterers Association, says the caterers will not resume work until their arrears are paid.

She stated that the association is still awaiting payment of arrears for last academic year. She said, “We are requesting for payment of, at least, the third term of last year to enable us pay some of our debts.”

Cudjoe said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the caterers’ industrial action over unpaid arrears.

Harsh economic conditions

She said they have met with the managers of the programme and expecting payments soon. She bemoaned the harsh economic challenges faced by the caterers, saying their creditors have become impatient with them.

Cudjoe said they are also demanding an increment in the rate per child from 97 pesewas to GHC 3 to meet the rising cost of foodstuff.

Kwaku Frimpong, a caterer at Teshie Laboma Presbyterian School, said they had to withdraw their services to press home their demands. The GNA, in a visit to some schools in Accra, observed that the caterers were absent.

School authorities who spoke with the GNA noted that the situation has affected enrolment. They pleaded with the government to address the concerns of the caterers so they can resume their work.
