Bawumia’s inroads in the North forced NDC to change venue for campaign launch, says Tonto
The political aide to Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, accuses the NDC of busing people to its campaign launch over the weekend in Tamale
Kofi Tonto, a political aide to Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, has said that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had to change the location for its campaign launch from the Central Region to the Northern Region because of the impact that Dr Bawumia’s campaign has been having in the North.
The NDC on Saturday (27 July) launched its campaign for the 2024 general election in Tamale in the Northern Region.
However, speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (29 July), Tonto accused the NDC of busing people to the event over the weekend.
Tonto claimed that the NDC had wanted to launch its national campaign in the Central Region.
“A bird tells me that the NDC initially planned to launch their campaign in the Central Region, and then they quickly had to restrategise because they realised the impact the NPP presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, is making in the Northern Region,” he said.
“Look at the crowds they bused to Tamale. I say bused confidently, because it was all over social media with their communicators and leaders actually saying, ‘We have a bus here. People who want to go should call this number so you can also get to Tamale.’
“And if you look at the crowd they got and you juxtapose it with the crowd we got in Yagaba-Kubori [a remote constituency in the North East Region] alone … But for us it was not even about the crowd: it’s about the inroads we are making,” Tonto said.
