Bawumia: We’ll break the eight with our superior record

The vice-president says although “breaking the eight will not be easy”, he is very optimistic it will happen in 2024

The Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is confident that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will become the first political party in the Fourth Republic to break the eight-year power cycle.

The Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition has been in power since 2016 and will complete its second-term of the Akufo-Addo government in 2024 when a general election will be held.

Speaking at the annual national delegates’ conference of the NPP in Kumasi on Sunday (19 December), Dr Bawumia said although “breaking the eight will not be easy”, he is very optimistic that “for the first time in our history we’ll break the eight.”

According to him, the NPP has a superior record as compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) hence it is in a pole position to remain in government after the 2024 elections.

“I believe if we’re united we shall break the eight. Our success will depend on how we conduct ourselves. We must not take down each other, but rather the NDC whose return will be a disaster for Ghana,” Dr Bawumia said.

He added: “I believe by the grace of God we’ll be able to break the eight because we’ve a superior record. We can give you at least 25 social interventions we have implemented to reduce the sufferings of Ghanaians. Can you mention any social intervention by the NDC?”

In March this year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said it expects that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the 2024 elections.

Arrests

Meanwhile, the police have arrested at least eight individuals at the national delegates’ conference. The police effected the arrest with the aid of the party’s private security, Asaase News’ Ashanti Regional correspondent Jonathan Ofori reported.

The suspects were arrested by security agencies after they breached protocols at the grounds. The all-male suspects, yet to be identified, have been whisked away by the police who have begun investigations into their activities.

Surveillance cameras have been installed at strategic positions at the Heroes’ Park at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, the venue of the two-day conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Similar surveillance cameras have also been mounted at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus, where the delegates will be lodging.

The state-owned Daily Graphic reported that in all, 400 surveillance cameras have been installed.
The conference is on the theme: “NPP: Our resolve, our determination and commitment to Ghana’s development”.

Over 6000 delegates are attending the conference to consider 38 proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.
