The legacy of Pope Francis will inspire generations, says Dr Bawumia

Reacting to news of the Pope’s passing on Monday (21 April), Mahamudu Bawumia said he received the announcement with “deep grief” and that the world has lost a spiritual father whose values transcended borders

Ghana’s former vice-president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid glowing tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as “a man of pure heart” who embodied humility, compassion and inclusiveness throughout his papacy.

Reacting to news of the Pope’s passing on Monday (21 April), Dr Bawumia said he received the announcement with “deep grief”, noting that the world had lost a spiritual father whose values transcended borders.

“The late Pope was a man of unwavering peace and compassion. He lived a life of inclusiveness and humility which was admired by many around the world,” Dr Bawumia wrote in a heartfelt statement.

“When I visited him a year ago, he left such a remarkable impression on me as one whose true essence and outlook on life was to live pure and right.”

Inspirational legacy

Dr Bawumia joined Catholics in Ghana and around the world in mourning the death of the first Latin American pope, one whose leadership was marked by efforts to reform the Church, defend the environment and promote interfaith dialogue.

“Please accept my most sincere condolences,” he said. “May his legacy inspire us as we continue to pursue our individual mandates on Earth.”

Dr Bawumia’s statement adds to a host of tributes by global leaders honouring Pope Francis, who passed away this morning at the age of 88 following complications from double pneumonia.

As condolences pour in from across the world, preparations are under way at the Vatican for the Pope’s funeral. The Catholic Church has also confirmed that a conclave of the cardinals will soon convene to elect a new spiritual leader.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected in 2013 and served for over a decade as a transformative and at times controversial figure in the Church. His message of mercy, social justice and care for the vulnerable resonated globally – including in Africa, where his visits and advocacy struck a particular chord.
