Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his commitment to transitioning Ghana’s energy sector to solar power in a bid to reduce the cost of living, particularly electricity prices.
He explains that the current high cost of electricity is largely due to the importation of oil and gas for power generation, which has led to significant price hikes for consumers.
Solar power has gained global traction as a clean, renewable energy source, with countries investing heavily in solar farms.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), solar energy is one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, with the potential to provide affordable, sustainable electricity, especially in regions with abundant sunlight like Ghana.
Dr Bawumia believes solar energy offers a practical and sustainable solution to the country’s energy challenges.
“The electricity bill has increased because we import oil and gas to produce electricity. I thus want us to use solar power to generate electricity. The technology exists already, and we have enough sunlight to produce solar power. I will create solar farms in all districts which will reduce the cost of electricity by 50%,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
In his campaign in the Asante Akim South on Saturday (16 November) Dr. Bawumia consistently focused on reducing the cost of living, which he believes will help Ghanaians lead more fulfilling lives.
Alongside promoting solar energy, he has pledged to support businesses and ease household expenditure.
The Obogumanhene, Nana Owusu Ampehone, expressed his support for the NPP government’s Free SHS policy, noting that it has positively impacted the people of Asante Akim South.
He also called on Dr. Bawumia to prioritize town road construction should he be elected.
“Free SHS has come to help the chiefs and people of Asante Akim South. We only plead with Dr. Bawumia to construct our town roads when we vote for him,” Nana Owusu Ampehone said.
