Bawku SHS student shot dead in dorm raid, school closed indefinitely

Authorities have shut down the Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region after a student was shot and killed on campus in a suspected targeted attack.

The incident occurred around 8:30pm on Saturday (26 July) when unidentified gunmen reportedly scaled the school’s perimeter wall, entered the boys’ dormitory, and dragged 18-year-old Hakim Kundima outside before shooting him.

The attackers fled immediately, and no arrests have been made. The victim’s elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed the killing to local media, adding that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally delivered the body to the family.

The Municipal Security Council announced the school’s temporary closure, citing safety concerns for both students and staff.

The killing of Hakim Kundima came just hours before a separate shooting incident at Nalerigu Senior High School in the neighbouring North East Region, where two students were also gunned down under mysterious circumstances. The two attacks have raised serious concerns over student safety in the region’s schools.

Police investigations into both incidents are ongoing. Authorities have yet to confirm any direct links between the two attacks.
