Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu elected as vice-chairman of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

In the election, which was conducted via email in July 2021, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu secured 19 votes while Gerry Brownlee of New Zealand garnered ten

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has been elected by the executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association as the CPA’s acting vice-chair.

The election of the leader of government business in Parliament, who represented the CPA from the African region, followed a poll between him and his sole contender, Gerry Brownlee from the CPA New Zealand branch.

In the poll, which was conducted via email in July, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu secured 19 votes, beating Brownlee, who garnered ten votes.

The declaration of the result paves the way for the Majority parliamentary leader to join the next executive committee meeting of the CPA, which will run from 27-30 September 2021.

Secretary general’s thanks

Communicating the outcome of the polls in a letter dated 6 August 2021, the secretary general of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Stephen Twigg (the former British MP for Enfield Southgate and Liverpool West Derby), thanked all members of the association who cast their vote during the election.

“The voting of the CPA acting vice-chairperson was undertaken in accordance with Article 21(6) of the constitution, which allows for an election of an acting vice-chairperson: ‘in the absence of a formal meeting, an election to determine the successful candidate with a simple majority vote will take place by an email ballot of the executive committee members’.

Delight

He added: “As such, I am delighted to confirm that Honourable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, from the CPA Africa Region, has been voted by the executive committee to be the CPA acting vice-chairperson.

“We look forward to welcoming Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at the upcoming executive committee meeting,” Twigg said.
