Bawku conflict: GBA backs Otumfuo-led mediation, pledges legal support for peace efforts

In a strongly worded resolution, the GBA acknowledged the “devastating impact” of the conflict and reiterated its support for ongoing mediation spearheaded by traditional authorities, urging all stakeholders to commit fully to peacebuilding

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has thrown its weight behind the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and other traditional leaders as they lead efforts to broker peace in the protracted Bawku conflict in the Upper East Region.

At its 2025 Mid-Year Conference held in Accra on Saturday, the GBA expressed grave concern over the persistent violence in Bawku, which continues to claim lives and damage property, deepening national anxieties over cohesion and security.

In a strongly worded resolution, the GBA acknowledged the “devastating impact” of the conflict and reiterated its support for ongoing mediation spearheaded by traditional authorities, urging all stakeholders to commit fully to peacebuilding.

“We support the involvement of eminent chiefs across Ghana, whose wisdom, neutrality, and traditional authority are critical in fostering reconciliation and lasting peace,” the Association noted.

The GBA also pledged to use its platform to advocate for peace and push for constitutional and legal mechanisms that could support long-term stability in the troubled enclave.

Galamsey menace

The Association also turned its focus to the escalating crisis of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, warning of its irreversible toll on the environment, water bodies, and public health.

In its resolution, the GBA condemned the destruction caused by galamsey and called for a “decisive and sustained response” from government, security agencies, and other stakeholders.

“Illegal mining is a direct threat to Ghana’s future. It poisons our water, pollutes our land, and destroys livelihoods,” the GBA stated.

It urged the judiciary to prioritise and expedite cases related to illegal mining, stressing that justice must be delivered “without fear or favour.”

The twin appeals on Bawku and galamsey highlight the GBA’s evolving role in not only safeguarding the rule of law but also confronting national security and environmental challenges.
