Baseball5: Golden Palms given heroes welcome after defending African Youth championship in South Africa

The team humbled Kenya 5:5 and 8:5 to retain the title and qualify for the the World Cup to be held in Mexico in November.

The Ghana Baseball5 team was given a hero’s welcome at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra on Tuesday (14 January) after they defended the Youth Africa Baseball5 championship in South Africa to qualify for the 2025 World Cup.

The WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup 2025 is scheduled for November with World No. 13 Ghana and No. 15 Kenya set to participate in the tournament later this year in Mexico. The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics.

The WBSC Africa Youth Baseball5 African Championships, hosted by South Africa Baseball, took place at the Western Cape Sports School in Cape Town, South Africa from 8 to 12 January 2025.

The Golden Palms triumphed over hosts South Africa with impressive scores of 9:4 and 7:3. securing their spot in the finals before humbling Kenya 5:5 and 8:5 to retain the title.

The Ghana Olympic Committee president Ben Nunoo Mensah welcomed the team.

“When you go out there to represent Ghana, and you kill yourself and give us your best to Mother Ghana, there’s always a reward for you.”- Nuno Mensah told the team.

“For the rest of the team, I’m going to discuss by GOC board, and I’m sure we’ll also find something very good for you because what you have done, means a lot to Mother Ghana. It is the beginning of good things to happen to Ghana in 2025.”

The team displayed exceptional resilience and unity despite their financial troubles prior to the tournament under the astute leadership of Head Coach Daniel Yaw Atiemo and Assistant Coach Daniel Obeng Asiamah.

Head Coach Daniel Yaw Atiemo expressed his gratitude to the players for the excellent work done.

“I’m so proud of them, because nobody promised them, that when you come, we are giving you this. But they play with their passion”

“So right now, we need support so that we can prepare well for this World Cup, because if we get financial support, that’s what we can prepare well for this World Cup, then we can also get ahead of what others are also doing.”- Daniel said.
