Bank of Ghana appoints Kwakye, Gatsi and Kumah as MPC advisors to bolster economic policy
The appointments to the Bank of Ghana advisory board aim to strengthen gains by the cedi and support Ghana’s economic recovery

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has appointed three of the country’s most respected economists as advisors to its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in a strategic move to strengthen economic policymaking and ensure macroeconomic stability.
Announcing the decision on Wednesday (21 May), the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, emphasised that the appointments are aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of monetary policy, particularly as Ghana navigates economic recovery and a stabilising currency.
“This move is essential in sustaining the cedi’s appreciation and supporting our broader economic objectives,” Dr. Asiama stated during the 124th MPC meeting.
The new Bank of Ghana advisors
-
Dr John Kwabena Kwakye: director of research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and a highly respected economist and policy analyst
-
Professor John Gatsi: dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, known for his financial and academic expertise
-
Dr Francis Kumah: A seasoned economist with significant experience, including a former role as IMF resident representative
Dr Asiama described the appointees as “distinguished professionals with deep technical expertise and policy insight”, adding that their presence would foster evidence-based and diversified policy decisions at a time when Ghana’s economy is at a turning point.
“Their collective wisdom is expected to enhance the robustness of our monetary decisions and long-term macroeconomic goals,” he added.
These appointments are part of the BoG’s broader strategy to modernise its monetary frameworks, diversify perspectives within the MPC and adapt to global and local economic shifts.
