The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the North East Region has warned residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to higher grounds as the Bagre Dam spillage begins today, Monday (19 August).

In an interview with Asaase News, the regional NADMO director, Alhassan John Kweku stated that five districts will be impacted by the spillage.

The districts include, Mamprugu Moaduri District, West Mamprusi Municipal, East Mamprusi Municipal, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri district, Yunyoo-Nasuan district, and the Chereponi districts.

He advised farmers against attempting to salvage their crops from the floodwaters, urging them to wait until the water subsides.

“As a disaster management body, it is our mandate to put the general public, especially, those along the White Volta on alert so that those who are living in lowland [can] move to higher grounds for their own safety,” Alhassan advised the farmers.

He added that “some communities will be cut off as the result of the spillage and the majority of our road network will also be washed away.”

Alhassan reiterated that “this is the case that some people also try to do harvesting [of immature crops] in the water, so we are just asking them to stay off from the floodwaters so that when the water resides we can go back and do our normal work.”
