Bagbin: ‘I will do more than before’ as Speaker of Ghana’s ninth Parliament

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament/NPP incumbent MPs lose seats

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has committed to redoubling his efforts and fully dedicating himself to the responsibilities ahead if confirmed as the Speaker of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament.

His renewed commitment follows a directive from President-elect John Dramani Mahama, who tasked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership to nominate Bagbin for the Speaker role in the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

President-elect Mahama, highlighting Bagbin’s extensive experience and leadership, expressed confidence in his ability to steer the legislative arm of government through the challenges ahead.

In response, Speaker Bagbin conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the President-elect, NDC leadership, and the party’s parliamentary executives for placing their trust in him.

“I am deeply humbled by His Excellency’s confidence in my ability to lead the august House as we begin a new chapter in our nation’s democratic journey,” Bagbin said.

Reflecting on his longstanding service to Parliament and the nation, Bagbin reiterated his dedication to the principles of democracy, justice, and fairness.

“Throughout my years of service to Parliament and the people of Ghana, I have always remained loyal to Ghana and committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law,” he affirmed.

As Speaker, Bagbin pledged to uphold these principles while ensuring that Parliament operates with integrity, transparency, and inclusiveness.

“I would like to take this opportunity to assure the President-Elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, and the people of Ghana that I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country, working to strengthen our democratic institutions and to ensure that Parliament remains an effective and responsive institution to the needs and hopes of the people,” Bagbin added.

He also expressed appreciation to the NDC National Executives and Parliamentary Leadership for granting him the opportunity to serve a second term as Speaker.

Bagbin’s leadership is expected to play a critical role in fostering cooperation and advancing the nation’s democratic governance as Ghana embarks on this new parliamentary journey.
