Ayikoi Otoo to NPP: Our communication must be effective

Ayikoi Otoo says strengthening the party's communications is key in order to effectively project the achievement of President Akufo-Addo

Nii Ayikoi Otoo, a national chairman aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has emphasised the need for the party to overhaul its communication team ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, strengthening the party’s communications is key in order to effectively project the achievements of President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (22 June), Otoo said: “I do not necessarily believe in ‘breaking the 8,’ I believe in winning power.”

“Should the NPP win power in 2024, it can only be done through proper communication of the records of government’s successes in the face of the people.

“I believe that there is a big communication gap in the government. The achievements of the party needs to be better communicated; we must empower our communication wings. In government, you can’t campaign on change, it must be on your achievements and that must be communicated well,” the former Attorney General said.

“To achieve this, you need a strong communication wing who will tell our story to the general populace. So far, I’m not seeing that. It’s not that party communicators are not doing their jobs, they’ve not been empowered,” Otoo said.

We’ve been poor in communicating Akufo-Addo’s record

Dr Stephen Amoah, a member of the finance committee of Parliament, has said the government’s communication machinery must step up efforts in projecting the achievements of President Akufo-Addo for Ghanaians to appreciate what has been done over the years.

The Nhyiaeso MP said this has become even more crucial as the impact of the global economic challenge bites hard at the Ghanaian economy.

Planting for Food and Jobs was very important … but there could have been circumstances like the fluctuation of the world market which may have impacted it negatively,” Amoah told Asaase News.

“No government has done many of the things that President Akufo-Addo has done, but we don’t see it being properly reported and communicated… I am not criticising anybody, but this is fact.

“If the citizens get to understand the impact of inflation everywhere… they would understand but we don’t see this government communicating any of this,” he said.
