Ayawaso East NDC primary: six aspirants in race, filing fee pegged at GHC40,000

NDC

Six aspirants have completed the picking of nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East, as the party fixed a filing fee of GHC40,000 for candidates.

Female aspirants and persons with disabilities will pay half of the amount, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, said on Accra-based Joy FM.

“The filing fee is GHC40,000 for aspirants. Females will pay 50 per cent of the amount and persons with disabilities will also pay the same,” he said.

Aspirants are expected to file their nomination forms on January 27, followed by appeals, vetting and balloting on 28 January. The primary will be held on February 7 using the party’s old delegates album, Tanko added.

Aspirants

Those who picked forms are Mohammed Ramme, the NDC’s Ayawaso East constituency chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; Dr Yakubu Azindow; Najib Mohammed Sani; and Salam Daru.

The primary comes after the death of the Ayawaso East MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on 4 January, which led Parliament to declare the seat vacant. The Electoral Commission (EC) has since scheduled a by-election for 3 March to fill the vacancy.
