Allow experts to manage MUSIGA, says Kaywa

The renowned sound engineer said the association needs experts to oversee the operations of the union in order to streamline royalties payment among others in the interest of musicians

The CEO of recording firm, Highly Spiritual Records, David Kojo Kyei, popularly known as, Kaywa has called for a change of the leadership of the Musicians’ Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The renowned sound engineer said the association needs experts to oversee the operations of the union in order to streamline royalties payment among others in the interest of musicians.

Speaking on Asaase 99.5 Accra‘s Between Hours show recently, the producer said, “If you go to SAMBRO [Southern African Music Rights Organisation] in South Africa, it is not the musicians who handle it. It is people who have strong ideas, solid ideas, like policy makers or people who can manage stuff properly [who] are handling it.”

Kaywa kicked against the status quo of solely having musicians to run MUSIGA.

“If we can have people to clearly manage our affairs that will be good. Let’s get the right people to do the right thing,” he told the host Naa Ashorkor.

Music as a national agenda

Kaywa said there is the need for our society to eliminate the mindset that music is meant for school dropouts.

“Music plays an integral role in our lives in the areas of politics and church among others. Music plays an important role.  Unfortunately in our setup, we were told and taught and oriented [that] music is for [school] dropouts,” he said.

According to him, the government must consider music as a national agenda.
