Auditor-General launches nationwide payroll audit
The audit, which covers the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024, will scrutinise the payroll records of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as subvented organisations listed under the Controller and Accountant-General’s payroll

The Auditor-General has begun a nationwide payroll audit targeting all entities on the government’s payroll system, in a move aimed at tightening financial oversight and eliminating irregularities.
The audit, which covers the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024, will scrutinise the payroll records of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as subvented organisations listed under the Controller and Accountant-General’s payroll.
As part of the exercise, a full headcount of government-paid staff will also be undertaken.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Office of the Auditor-General called on all affected institutions to cooperate fully, granting auditors unrestricted access to all relevant records—whether physical or electronic.
“The Office of the Auditor-General calls on all institutions to provide unhindered access to books, returns, and other documents, including computerized and electronic records, to ensure the audit is completed smoothly and within schedule,” the statement said.
The audit is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public financial management, root out payroll fraud, and improve accountability in the public sector.
Previous audits have exposed ghost names, duplicated payments, and irregular salary adjustments across several government agencies. Officials hope the latest exercise will help plug loopholes and ensure value for money in the public wage bill.
