The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election, the AU said on Saturday (17 January).
Museveni won the 15 January vote with 71.61% of ballots cast, according to official results.
In a statement, Youssouf praised the leadership of former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, who headed the joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) election observation mission to Uganda.
The AU commission chair said the organisation remained committed to supporting democracy and effective governance across Africa, while applauding Ugandans for what he described as their commitment to democratic consolidation, peace, security and development.
Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, has ruled Uganda since 1986.
