Atwima Mponua: 40 assembly members back Sakina Oforiwaa for district chief executive role

Support for Ms Oforiwaa has grown to 40 assembly members, who describe her as a unifier and a development-oriented leader well suited for the position

About 40 assembly members in the Atwima Mponua District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to nominate Sakina Oforiwaa as the district chief executive (DCE) for the area.

The lawmakers say the delay in appointing a substantive DCE has stalled governance and slowed development projects in the district, citing the leadership vacuum as a key obstacle to effective administration.

Atwima Mponua and the Asante Mampong Municipality are the only districts in the Ashanti Region yet to receive nominees following the recent appointment of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) nationwide.

Out of 43 assemblies in the region, 41 have had their chief executives nominated, with many confirmed and sworn into office.

The petition, originally signed on 9 May 2025 by over 30 assembly members and government appointees, identifies Sakina Oforiwaa as the preferred candidate among three contenders for the DCE role.

Support for Ms Oforiwaa has since grown to 40 assembly members, who describe her as a unifier and development-oriented leader suited for the position.

At a news conference, Salifu David, assembly member for the Ananso Electoral Area, praised Ms Oforiwaa’s integrity, commitment and leadership, highlighting her support for assembly members by providing them with motorbikes to help them perform their duties.

Speed up development

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Young Cadres in Atwima Mponua have also endorsed her nomination, urging President Mahama to appoint Ms Oforiwaa to accelerate development in the district.

Isaac Ampaabeng, communications director for the NDC Young Cadres in the constituency, said: “We appeal to the president to consider and name our mother, Sakina Oforiwaa, to help bring development to the district.”

Ms Oforiwaa is a teacher by profession and former assembly member for the Adobewura Electoral Area. She has been active in politics for over two decades, serving in various roles in the NDC at constituency and regional levels.

Her experience includes stints as the NDC branch secretary (2000–2008), campaign team member, government appointee and subcommittee member at the local assembly. She also held leadership positions such as president of TEIN (the NDC tertiary students’ organisation) at Wesley College of Education and regional communication team member for the NDC Ashanti Region.

Ms Oforiwaa was an NDC parliamentary candidate aspirant in 2019 and still holds key positions in the party.
