Attorney General drops charges against ex-BoG deputy governor Asiama

Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine, has filed a notice to withdraw all charges against Johnson Pandit Asiama, the former second deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Asiama had stood trial in two separate cases related to the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, signed and filed the notice of withdrawal at the trial court. The notice stated:

“Please take note that at the next hearing of this suit, the Prosecutor, on the instructions of the Honourable Attorney General, will withdraw all offences and/or charges against Johnson Asiama under Sections 59(1), (2)(b)(ii) and (5) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act 1960 (Act 30).”

Since 2020, Asiama and other accused individuals had faced charges of fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, conspiracy to commit a crime, and violations of the Bank of Ghana Act. The Attorney General cited insufficient evidence for Asiama’s withdrawal.

The former finance minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor, his son and executives of Duffuor’s private company face money laundering charges. Only Asiama’s case is withdrawn; others continue.
