West Gonja: World Vision holds fair for smallholder businesses

The fair was based on unsustainable environmental practices in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region

World Vision Ghana has organised a market linkage fair for stakeholders in agribusiness on Thursday (14 September).

The fair was based on unsustainable environmental practices in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region. It was organised under the auspices of the European Union Landscape and Environmental Agility EU-LEAN project,

The project is also designed to conserve biodiversity, building climate resilience, reducing emissions from land-use changes in the Savannah high forest, and all transition zones in the country.

The project manager for the EU funded Landscape and Environmental Agility (LEAN) project, Joseph Edwin Yelkabong said the main aim of the market linkage is to address the ready market challenges of smallholder business owners in the industry and will also bring actors within the agricultural value chain to network and also identify potential buyers.

“I have seen that they are already networking and that going forward, we are going to see a different dimension in agricultural sector in the area here,” he said.

About 1,600 fire volunteers, according to him, have been trained to prevent wildfires while additional 1,600 farmers have also been equipped with skills to prune shrooms to grow into trees.

The acting regional operations manager for northern sector at World Vision, Sergious Before on his part, expressed worry about the success of the project.

He urged key partners and sector players in the agribusiness, to come on board to support farmers to generate greater structural transformation in families for better access to farm inputs, technology and extension services to farmers.

“It will also improve their access to markets, generate decent employment and make nutritious food available for our children,” Before said.

The municipal coordinator for West Gonja Jimah Yakubu, called on farmers to engage in modern farming practices.
