Ashanti Region: Two dead as illegal gold mine collapses at Mpasatia

Local authorities have called for urgent intervention. Salifu Karim, the Assemblyman for Mpasatia Ahembronum, told Asaase News that immediate support is needed to rescue those still buried

Rescue efforts are underway in the Ashanti Region after an illegal gold mine collapsed, killing at least two people.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District when a group of miners was searching for gold. The pit caved in, trapping them underground.

Community members have since recovered two bodies, but fears remain that more people may still be trapped beneath the debris.

Local authorities have called for urgent intervention. Salifu Karim, the Assemblyman for Mpasatia Ahembronum, told Asaase News that immediate support is needed to rescue those still buried.

“So far two bodies. They are two male adults. One from Mpasatia and another is an Ewe by tribe, but he is yet to be identified. There are fears many of them are trapped underground”, Karim said.

“The police came in, but they have since returned to base. Now we are making arrangement to speak with the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, to aid rescue efforts but for now, we have taken matters into our hands”, he indicated.

Efforts to retrieve any remaining victims continue, as illegal mining—known locally as galamsey—remains a major challenge in Ghana, often leading to fatal accidents.
