Ashanti Region: Strong winds rip off roofs, disrupt education in Mampong
With many homes left uninhabitable, affected residents have been forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives and friends. The storm also disrupted education, as the damage to school buildings made it impossible for classes to continue.

A heavy rainstorm that swept through Nintin and Hwediem in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region has left several residents homeless, causing extensive damage to private and public properties.
The storm, which struck on the afternoon of Tuesday (18 February) brought strong winds that ripped off roofing sheets from homes, destroyed infrastructure, and left key public facilities such as the Nintin Presby Primary School and the local market square in ruins.
Several electricity poles were also damaged, plunging parts of the community into darkness.
With many homes left uninhabitable, affected residents have been forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives and friends. The storm also disrupted education, as the damage to school buildings made it impossible for classes to continue.
Assemblyman for the area, Hon. Nicholas Osei Owusu, assured that immediate interventions are being implemented to restore teaching and learning.
“As we speak, the private school has been closed, but we hope they will return tomorrow. However, the environment is not conducive for teaching and learning, so the children have been asked to go home,” he explained.
“Ninety percent of the public primary school’s roof has been ripped off, but we have made temporary arrangements for lessons to continue. The local Presby temple will serve as a classroom, and we are also negotiating for a room in the JHS block to accommodate some students.”
Local authorities and emergency response teams are assessing the full extent of the damage and working to provide relief for affected residents.
Plans are also being considered for long-term reconstruction efforts to prevent similar disasters in the future.
