Ashanti Region: Six killed in road crash

Emergency services showed up at the scene shortly after the accident was reported at about 6:30am on Wednesday (2 August)

At least six people have been killed and scores injured when a passenger bus and a truck collided at Nkenkensu on the Kumasi-Techiman highway.

The incident created a major gridlock on the transatlantic road for hours as the emergency crew conveyed the injured to the hospital.

Emergency services showed up at the scene shortly after the accident was reported at about 6:30am on Wednesday (2 August)

Officials say the accident involved a Wa-bound VIP bus with registration number AP 1986-22 and a trailer truck with registration number BF 2315 F1 03 loaded with cereals heading towards Kumasi.

The deceased include two females and four males, according to the rescue team.

An officer with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Offinso North municipality, Mammoah Elijah, fears the death toll could rise.

“Those who survived with various degrees of injury are receiving treatment at the Nkenkensu Government Hospital. The deceased include both drivers of the vehicles. Earlier there was a massive gridlock on that stretch, so we had to ensure the road was cleared,” Elijah told Asaase News.

“For now, the police will have to advance their investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the NADMO coordinator added.

In conversation with Asaase News, a surviving victim said: “The driver made a wrongful overtaking but lost control while moving to his lane. He was at top speed, so there was no way he could have returned to his lane, resulting in the sudden collision.”

Asaase News later gathered that some of the victims would be referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Crashes are common on Ghana’s highways because of poor maintenance, disregard for traffic regulations, and bad roads. An average of six people reportedly die daily due to road accidents, according to road safety authority records.
