Ashanti Region: power supply fault shuts Barekese water plant, Ghana Water says

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) says operations at the Barekese Water Treatment Plant have been shut down due to power supply challenges, disrupting water production for parts of Kumasi and surrounding communities.

In a brief notice, the state-owned utility said the plant was taken offline to allow power supply to stabilise, adding that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had been informed of the situation.

GWL urged customers to conserve water while efforts are made to restore power and resume treatment operations.

The Barekese plant is a major source of treated water for the Kumasi metropolis, and prolonged outages often worsen supply constraints in the Ashanti Region, where residents already face intermittent shortages.

GWL did not give a timeline for restoration of services.
