A heavy rainstorm that hit Sekyere Kumawu on Wednesday (4 March) has left 49 homes and eight schools severely affected, disrupting learning and displacing several residents, officials say.
Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage as they work to restore normalcy.
Speaking to Asaase News on the situation, the Sekyere Kumawu Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Emmanuel Obeng, described the impact of the storm and the measures being taken to assist affected students.
“For now, the R/C Primary School has a new block, and my MP has instructed that we move the affected students from the old block to the new one, which is yet to be commissioned,” Obeng explained.
“As I am talking to you, we are working to get roofing sheets to start repairs and get them back to school by Monday. Otherwise, this will affect their learning,” he said.
NADMO has already reported the situation to its national and regional headquarters, seeking urgent intervention. Obeng emphasized the need for immediate support from stakeholders, including the general public, to facilitate the recovery process.
“We are appealing to the world for support. Some schools have been partly affected, while others have been shut completely. We don’t want students to run shifts, so we are merging schools and re-roofing the affected ones,” he noted.
