Ashanti Region: Gov’t to operationalise Sewua and Afari Hospitals by August, says Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has assured that both the Sewua Government Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital will be fully operational by August this year.

During his recent visit to the Ashanti Region to inspect hospital facilities, Dr Okoe Boye emphasised the crucial role the Sewua Hospital will play in alleviating the patient load at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

He reiterated his commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Energy Ministry, Regional Coordinating Council and Ghana Health Service, to address power challenges and ensure the 250-bed capacity Sewua Hospital becomes functional promptly.

“The Sewua project, with its power issues, will be addressed through joint efforts with the Energy Ministry, Regional Coordinating Council, and Ghana Health Service to ensure this project benefits the entire region as soon as possible,” Dr Okoe Boye stated.

He also noted the government’s significant progress in completing various health projects in the region, including those outside the Agenda 111 initiative.

“For example, the Bekwai Hospital project initiated under President Kufour, remained stalled for eight years under the previous regime, and was swiftly operationalised by the Akufo-Addo government. We are applying the same urgency to other projects.”

Dr Okoe Boye stressed that beyond the Agenda 111 projects, the government has worked on nearly 20 additional health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

“My prayer is that we work hard to operationalize Sewua and Afari by August. These two facilities alone will add close to 600 beds, which is almost equivalent to the capacity of Komfo Anokye,” he added.
