Ashanti Kingdom mourns death of Silver Stool occupant, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who passed away at the age of 86, was a prominent traditional leader and served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been formally informed of the death of the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, in line with Asante tradition.

The announcement, led by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II, was made during a solemn ceremony at the Manhyia Palace, marking the end of a notable chapter in the Ashanti Kingdom’s history.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who passed away at the age of 86, was a prominent traditional leader and served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. He reigned for 26 years as occupant of the Silver Stool — the second-highest traditional office in the Asante hierarchy — and played a key role in upholding Asante customs and representing the Asantehene in critical matters of state and tradition.

Born on 31 December 1939, he was known in private life as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie. A lawyer and economist by training, he also served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology before ascending to the stool.

Widely respected for his diplomacy and statesmanship, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was regarded as a stabilising force within the chieftaincy institution and the broader traditional governance framework in Ghana.

His final public appearance was at the last Akwasidae celebration held in Mampong, where he reportedly criticised some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over alleged attempts to sow ethnic division during protests over the selection of a Municipal Chief Executive.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Mampong Traditional Council in the coming days.
