Ashaiman: Policemen probed as suspect dies in custody

The alleged traffic offender, Ebenezer Dosu, died in cells after a police officer reportedly refused to take action when he complained of stomach pains

At least three police officers at the Ashaiman District Police Station are being investigated over the death of a suspect, Ebenezer Dosu, in custody.

The 35-year-old man died last Thursday after complaining of “stomach pains”, a police report seen by Asaaseradio.com said.

The three officers being questioned over the incident are the station officer, Bismark Adongo, Kumi Ansah and the arresting officer, Prince Ofosuhene.

Negligence

The report says Dosu was arrested for an alleged road traffic offence.

A few hours after his arrest, he complained of a stomach ache but the officer on duty “refused to take action and kept suspect in cells”, the report says.

“At about 14.30 hours on 4/05/2022, the deceased woke up from sleep and went to the bathroom to shower but fell down unconscious,” the police report said, adding he was “pronounced clinically dead on arrival” at the Tema General Hospital.

“The cells leader and other inmates drew the counter officer Sgt Kumi Ansah’s attention to the fact that the deceased needed medical attention, but he still failed to act,” the report added.

The case has been referred to the Accra Regional CID for further investigation.
