ASEPA boss Mensah Thompson granted GHC50,000 bail

Mensah Thompson has been charged by the state with two counts of publication of false news and conduct conducive to a breach of the peace

The executive director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has been admitted to bail in the sum of GHC50,000 by a district court in Accra presided over by Magistrate Oheneba Kufuor.

Thompson has been charged by the state with two counts of publication of false news and conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.

Wild allegations

On 7 January 2022, writing on his Facebook wall, Thompson alleged that the presidential aeroplane of the Ghana Air Force was used by relatives of the president for a shopping trip to the United Kingdom between 20 and 30 December 2021.

The allegations read in part: ā€œSo between 20th and 30th of December 2021, during the Christmas, the children of a close relative of the president took Ghanaā€™s presidential jet the Falcon EX jet on a trip to the UK just for Christmas shopping.ā€

However, following a denial of Thompsonā€™s claims by the Ghana Armed Forces and a subsequent interrogation of Thompson by the military, he deleted his post and apologised for the false claims he made in his Facebook post.

In court

In court today (10 February 2022), when Thompson was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty to the two charges levelled against him.

His lawyer, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, quickly applied for bail for his client, assuring the court that his client will make himself available to stand trial at any material time he is called upon to do so.

Bail opposed

The police prosecutor, Chief Inspector Teye Okuffo, opposed the bail application on the grounds that the accused had failed to honour a policeĀ invitation without giving any tangible reason.

He later showed up at the police station when he got wind that a warrant had been issued for his arrest, the police prosecutor said in open court.

Chief Inspector Teye Okuffo, to this end, told the court that the accused person is likely not to avail himself to stand trial, should he be granted bail.

By court

Magistrate Oheneba Kufuor, in his ruling following the arguments by the parties, decided to admit the accused to bail in the sum of GHC50,000.

He further ordered that the accused must report to the police twice every week until a final determination of the case.

ā€œSitting is adjourned to 15 March 2022 for further hearing,ā€ Magistrate Kufuor ruled.
