Asantehene to deliver lecture on Asante culture in London

The lecture is in line with a growing programme of co-operation between Asanteman and international institutions to promote culture and mutual technical/business development, triggered by negotiations for the return of Asante artefacts stolen during the Sagrenti War

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is scheduled to give for a public lecture on Asante culture this summer at the British Museum in the UK.

The lecture is in line with an evolving programme of co-operation between Asanteman and international institutions to promote culture and mutual technical/business development, said a statement released by Ivor Agyeman-Duah, the chief representative for Manhyia Palace in negotiations for the return of Asante artefacts stolen during the Sagrenti War of 1874.

It will be the king’s first international lecture this year.

“The Asantehene [will] give a major public lecture on Asante Culture and Heritage: Past and Present on the platform of the BM in London in July 2024,” the statement said.

Introducing the event will be the president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Kwame Anthony Appiah, the internationally renowned Anglo-Ghanaian philosopher at New York University and the Laurance S Rockefeller Emeritus University Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University in the United States.

The exact date for the lecture is yet to be announced.
