Asamoah Gyan: I’ve not retired from the Black Stars

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (19 April), the forward said he is working on getting fit physically for a possible return to the Black Stars

The all-time leading top scorer for the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has said he is yet to retire from playing active football amid speculations his playing days are over.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (19 April), the forward said he is working on getting fit physically for a possible return to the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I want to be fit,” the 36-year-old told Asaase Radio’s Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.

“I’m still available to play for the national team, but the most important thing is my health, I have to be fit,” Baby Jet, as he is affectionately called, said.

“The talent is still there already. All I have to do is some finishing touches. Right now if they call me and I’m not fit how can I play? I believe in myself and I’m more focused,” the former Sunderland arrow head said.

According to Gyan, he is still open to playing competitive football should the opportunity avail itself.

Love for Ghana

He again talks about his love for Ghana and the national team, saying: “Nobody loves Ghana more than me. I feel like I love the country so much and I need to give everything. Even if I say ‘I’m upset with Ghana’ I will be lying to myself.”

“Even if I’m home, I will be supporting the team because I’m a Ghanaian… all the people saying they don’t support the team they are liars, in their heart they support the team,” the former Al Ain goal poacher said.

Gyan expressed how passionate he is when it comes to the national team, adding: “I always say it’s no wonder I have been able to succeed, it’s because I give my all when playing, even when I’m injured no one knows it.”
