Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe, the host of Energy 101 on Asaase 99.5 Accra, has been declared the Energy Media Personality of the Year at the 2023 Think Energy SDGs Awards held in Accra on Friday (30 June).
The seasoned broadcast journalist was recognised for his wealth of knowledge in the energy sector and how he uses his weekly show on Asaase 99.5 Accra to breakdown energy-related issues in Ghana and beyond.
Speaking to Asaase 99.5 Accra’s Winifred Lartey after receiving the award, Putuu, as he is affectionately called by his colleagues, said: “I’m very elated tonight for winning the prestigious SDG Think Energy Awards as the Energy Media Personality of the Year.”
Aboagye-Wiafe, has over the years used his experience in the energy sector to educate the public and communicate the essence of shifting the focus to renewable energy usage as part of achieving the SDG targets 7 and 13.
“It has come out of hard work and dedication towards our flagship programme Energy 101 and I thank the almighty God for the strength and for being a source of wisdom, which has carried the programme right from its inception till today,” he said.
Breaking down the hard subject
According to him, energy issues are quite hard and technical and a lot of misunderstanding and misreporting flood various networks every now and then.
“I am happy that we have a unique platform where we try to break down the thorny issues to the understanding of the ordinary people, but not also forgetting the needs of the diverse industry players and stakeholders.”
He, however, added that, the energy transition and Ghana’s role in ensuring that we are not left behind is very critical.
“All these are quite too hard for the ordinary ear. These are some of the issues that are broken down on my show Energy 101,” Aboagye-Wiafe, a fellow of the Bloomberg Media Initiative for Africa said, adding that, “I’m happy that we have been recognised for what we do in the energy space.”
Appreciation to Asaase family
Aboagye-Wiafe said: “I must also use the opportunity to appreciate the ingenuity of the chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who birthed the programme three years ago and has been keen to see it succeed.”
“I’m also thankful to the CEO of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd, Nenyi George Andah, whose contribution to the concept has been impressive. Last but not least, I must also appreciate the entire team who have played diverse roles in sustaining the various conversations on the programme.
“In a world where appreciation goes unspoken, I want to also acknowledge the executive board chairperson of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd., Nana Adjoa Hackman, for her impact and exceptional leadership in general.
“I’m also grateful to all and sundry from various parts of the globe who have reposed confidence in me and the programme and have voted massively for me to see victory tonight. God bless us all,” Aboagye-Wiafe said.
