Asaase Radio leads Ghana’s Black History Month 2025 celebrations with footprints of history

Black History Month has historically centred on the African-American experience, but Asaase Radio is broadening the conversation to tell a more comprehensive African story

Asaase Radio is set to commemorate Black History Month throughout February 2025 with an ambitious and far-reaching on-air and digital campaign under the theme “Legacies of Excellence: Celebrating 100 Years of African Achievement”.

This year’s celebration takes a pan-African approach, shining a spotlight on exceptional individuals from Ghana, Africa, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe who have shaped history in politics, activism, science, business, literature, sports, media and education.

A celebration of black excellence

Black History Month has historically centred on the African-American experience, but Asaase Radio is broadening the conversation to tell a more comprehensive African story.

The station will feature some of the most influential Black personalities of the past century, including:

  • Dr Kwame Nkrumah – The visionary leader of Ghana’s independence and a founding father of pan-Africanism
  • Angela Davis – The American activist and scholar whose work on racial and social justice continues to inspire
  • Patrice Lumumba – A symbol of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s fight for liberation
  • Shirley Chisholm – The first black woman elected to the US Congress, breaking barriers in global politics
  • Thomas Sankara – The revolutionary leader who redefined self-sufficiency in Burkina Faso

Beyond political leaders, the campaign will also honour literary giants such as Chinua Achebe and Toni Morrison, Miriam Makeba and other musical legends, as well as sports icons who have changed the game.

Engaging audiences across platforms

Asaase Radio will make these stories come alive through compelling on-air programming and digital engagement. Listeners can expect:

📻 Daily features on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Asaase Café, The 12 O’Clock Report and Rush Hour;

🎙 Live and recorded interviews with historians, thought leaders and influential personalities;

📱 Social media engagement, with viral videos, key quotes and interactive discussions;

🔎 Exclusive digital content, providing deeper insights into the lives and legacies of black pioneers.

Why this matters for Ghana

For Ghanaians, Black History Month is more than a celebration – it is a recognition of Africa’s role in shaping the global black experience.

Asaase Radio’s campaign will highlight the contributions of Ghanaian and African leaders who have influenced politics, business and culture worldwide.

At a time when Africa’s place in global affairs is being redefined, this initiative is a reminder that black history is not just a past to be remembered: it is a legacy that continues to shape the present and future.

Listeners can be part of the conversation by following #AsaaseBHM2025 on social media and tuning in to Asaase Radio throughout February.

Black excellence is not just history; it is a living, evolving story that belongs to all of us.
