Stakeholders urges Parliament to pass Health and Safety Bill

The Bill will ensure the health, safety and welfare of persons at the workplace and minimize causes of hazard

Edward Debrah, a health and safety professional and director of Ed Consults Limited, has called on Parliament to pass the Health and Safety Bill currently before the House.

His comments come barely two weeks after an unfortunate disaster that nearly wiped away a whole mining community of Appiatse in Bogoso of the Western region leaving, 14 people dead and a number of others injured.

Speaking on Energy 101, Debrah said the passing of the Health and Safety Bill will help forestall such future occurrences.

“Policymakers, the government should pay attention to the Health and Safety Bill currently before parliament. The ministry of labour and employment relations that once that bill is passed, we’re going to set up a health and safety authority that is going to fully regulate the entire activities as far as health and safety is concerned.

“… Currently, we’ve got different departments and agencies that are trying to do the work of regulating health and safety. But if the Environmental and Protection Agency (EPA) come to do their bit, fire service come to do their bit, department of factory inspectorate come to do their bit and there’s no collective agency that collates all of them together and charts that path, we still won’t be able to make any progress,”

In April 2019, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations said Parliament will pass the Occupational Safety and Health (OHS) Bill into law by the end of the year as part of efforts to promote workplace health and safety.

The bill, among other things and in accordance with the Labour Act, will be obligatory on the employer to ensure the health, safety and welfare of persons at the workplace by minimizing the causes of hazards inherent in the working environment.
