In a country where police holding cells were originally designed for temporary detention, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, aka BullGOD, is reimagining these spaces through his Adopt-a-Cell initiative. The campaign combines art, faith-based inspiration, and advocacy to create humane environments for inmates awaiting trial.
Reflecting on his own time in police custody, BullGOD shared harrowing experiences, including being confined in overcrowded and unsanitary cells at the SWAT facility in Accra.
“The last day I was there, the toilet was full of feces, there was no running water, and the ventilation was almost nonexistent. For the next year, I couldn’t sit comfortably because of the conditions I endured,” he recalled on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (13 February).
These experiences inspired the campaign, which has already transformed cells at Adabraka Police Station with murals, paint, and minor construction to improve living conditions. BullGOD explained the choice of art, saying, “Art has healing power. Blank, dirty walls breed hopelessness, but visuals, colors, and messages can inspire hope and reflection.”
The initiative, supported by artists, corporate sponsors, and public figures, plans to expand nationwide. Beyond aesthetics, it also includes mental health awareness, prayers, and legal support for inmates. BullGOD highlighted the broader societal impact: “The goal is not to make people comfortable, but to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate them into society. Conditions shouldn’t harden them; they should prepare them for better futures.”
With the campaign gaining momentum, BullGOD hopes it will spark systemic change and influence both public perception and government policy on detention conditions.
